SS139 NIAL MORGAN - The Fullness of a House CD
Second Sleep is proud to present the CD debut of Nial Morgan, a Los Angeles–based artist and producer who has been active for years within the city’s experimental music scene through projects spanning electronics, improvisation, and sound research. With this new work, Morgan moves away from the abrasiveness and immediacy that characterized his previous output, embracing instead a more intimate, evocative, and deeply personal direction. The album unfolds as an exploration of space, resonance, and sonic imperfection: a work suspended between rigorous electroacoustic composition and the unpredictability generated by unstable, unbalanced electrical systems. Using an extremely minimal setup, Morgan constructs a sonic universe capable of transforming the domestic environment into a living, breathing instrument. Across the seven tracks that compose the CD, every vibration, interference, and resonance seems to emerge directly from the walls, and objects inhabiting the recording space itself. The result is an immersive and layered listening experience where technical fragility and compositional precision coexist in constant tension. Far removed from any purely nostalgic or academic gesture, the record inhabits a liminal zone between musique concrète, minimal drone, and contemporary electroacoustic music, while retaining a strong emotional and physical presence. The compositions unfold gradually, allowing microscopic details, accidental harmonics, and sudden dynamic openings to surface, transforming noise into narrative material. With this debut, Nial Morgan delivers a mature and deeply coherent work, capable of balancing sonic research and perceptual intensity in a rare and highly personal way.
"A collection of short recordings realized through the fatigue of cheap variable speed controlled fans and the resonant character of [big wooden box, duralex glasses, stainless steel baster etc.] with no additional processing apart from some basic linear arrangement. Thinking about tired forms, the resulting impasse, and my own positioning; largely inconclusive. Assembled from 2022-2024."
